ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
NeoCity Academy offers a comprehensive English curriculum that features honors-level courses in 9th and 10th grade. All students in grade 9 are enrolled in Cambridge AICE General Paper - an honors-level course that allows them an opportunity for college credit upon passing the AICE exam at the end of the year. The coursework continues in 11th and 12th grade with Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and AP English Literature, respectively.

AP SEMINAR
AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Students learn to investigate a problem or issue, analyze arguments, compare different perspectives, synthesize information from multiple sources, and work alone and in a group to communicate their ideas.

AICE GENERAL PAPER
Grade: 9
Learners will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of issues in these three broad topic areas: economic, historical, moral, political, and social; science, including its history, philosophy, ethics, general principles, and applications; environmental issues; technology and mathematics; literature, language, the arts, crafts, and the media. Learners consider topics within local and international contexts. Learners should be able to draw upon knowledge and understanding gained from studying other subjects. Through the study of these broad topic areas, learners develop effective reading and writing skills in English. They work with information, ideas, and opinions. They analyze and evaluate opinions and ideas. They also learn how to build an argument. These skills are all highly transferable and will help learners in other subjects they are studying, and equip them for higher education or employment.

ENGLISH 2 HONORS
Grade: 10
The purpose of this course is to provide grade 10 students, using texts of high complexity, advanced integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language in preparation for college and career readiness.
Honors and Advanced Level Course Note: Advanced courses require a greater demand on students through increased academic rigor. Academic rigor is obtained through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted. Students are challenged to think and collaborate critically on the content they are learning. Honors level rigor will be achieved by increasing text complexity through text selection, focus on high-level qualitative measures, and complexity of task. Instruction will be structured to give students a deeper understanding of conceptual themes and organization within and across disciplines. Academic rigor is more than simply assigning to students a greater quantity of work.

AP RESEARCH
AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Grade: 11
The AP English Language and Composition course focuses on the development and revision of evidence-based analytic and argumentative writing, the rhetorical analysis of nonfiction texts, and the decisions writers make as they compose and revise. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Additionally, they read and analyze rhetorical elements and their effects in nonfiction texts—including images as forms of text— from a range of disciplines and historical periods.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE
Grade Level: 12
The AP English Literature and Composition course focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing about imaginative literature (fiction, poetry, drama) from various periods. Students engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works.
