High School Diploma Courses (GED®)

  • Program Description

    The General Educational Development (GED®) program provides instruction in science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. The GED® computer-based test is administered for $128.00.

    Average Program Length

    The length of the program depends on the functioning level of the students skills determined by the placement test and the student’s motivation. Therefore, the length of each of the above programs varies with each student. A computerized learning center for drill and practice, and individual tutoring can be provided to assist students’ progress.

    Admissions

    ALCO's high school/secondary Diploma classes are offered at the Main and Poinciana campuses.  These classes are taught in English only.  If your English speaking skills are not Advanced, we offer English classes at 6 locations (see English Courses).  Applicants seeking enrollment into one of ALCO's programs must take a placement test and pay for registration/tuition.     Registration, Payment, Testing

    • APPLY: Complete the registration form online.
    • PAY: Make the [short] Summer semester online payment fee of $55.00 ($30.00 tuition and $25.00 test).
    • MAKE:  Make the appointment to take the placement test.
    • TEST*: Bring your photo ID to take the 3-hour, in-person GOALS (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learning Success) test.
    • START: Begin class at your selected class location and time.

    *Whether you select face-to-face GED® classes or online GED® Academy classes, the GOALS placement test must be taken in person at our Main or Poinciana locations.

    *GOALS placement test scores expire after one (1) year.

    Insurance

    ALCO does not carry student accident insurance. Students are advised to carry their own insurance.

    Refunds

    NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO VOLUNTARILY WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS IN WHICH THEY HAVE ENROLLED. You will be notified only if the class you want is full or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

    GED® Academy**

    GED® Academy is an Internet-based interactive course designed to prepare participants for the GED® Examination. This online course provides students with the opportunity to learn any time, any place, and at any pace from the convenience of a computer. This unique learning experience allows instructors to communicate regularly via email and telephone to provide individualized instruction and accommodate the diverse learning styles of the learners.

    Distance learning courses are highly successful for people who find it difficult to meet at a particular location on a regular basis because of various obligations. Participants in this course will find the freedom of scheduling to be of value. Please be advised that this distance learning course requires 10 hours of interactive coursework weekly.

    **Requirements/Qualifications for Self-Paced, Online GED® Academy Classes

    In addition to having access to an electronic device (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone) with reliable internet, participants will need to have met one (1) of the following requirements:

    • GOALS Reading score of ≥228 or TABE Reading score of ≥536
    • GOALS Math score of ≥215 or TABE Math Score of ≥537
    • Passed at least one (1) GED® exam

Requirements/Qualification for High School Diploma (GED®) Courses

  • To take the GED®, Florida requires that you be at least 18 years old.

    You must never have completed high school and not be currently enrolled in high school.

    If you are underage, you need approval from your school district. If you are 16 or 17 and want to take the GED®, Florida has an Underage Waiver Form that must be completed by the Florida school district where you live. To be eligible, you have to meet the conditions set by your school district.
